Selecting the Right Color for Your Baby Quilt Pattern
Colors and designs have a large influence on what your quilt will end up looking like. You can pick from such a large array of colors for your quilt so it will be a very important factor. If you’re making a quilt for a certain person, then you would want to consider what their favorite colors may be or what room they may be using it in. My aunt had made quilts for both my daughters and she went with their favorite colors. She made my oldest one that was all blues from light blue to turquoise to a brilliant cobalt blue and had highlights of yellow and green in it to offset the blue. For my youngest, she went with purples, from light purple to a very deep purple and she offset these colors with yellow and white.
Color certainly has a large impact on how your quilt will turn out. You can do as my aunt did and pick one color then use a wide variety of different shades of that color, or you can go with two colors that match well and use different hues that match well. There are so many possibilities when choosing colors. You can even go with contrasting colors known to be opposites such as green and red (although that will look very Christmasy) or orange and blue.
Another great idea is to use colors of your favorite sports team. Mine is the Cincinnati Bengals, so I would choose orange and black and try to have some kind of a tiger stripe design like their logo. My husband’s favorite team is the Denver Broncos, so he would enjoy orange and blue. i think that is still their colors!
Whatever colors you choose, make sure they go well together. You don’t want to mix two dark colors. Traditional quilters say you should always strive to have some sort of white in the quilt so as to give your colors some pop!
Another way to choose your colors is to start with a pattern that really knocks your socks off. I know my Aunt is a fanatic at picking up different materials because of their colors and patterns and when she finds one she loves, she will usually build around that one favorite piece.
When using a pattern, it is generally not too hard to match your colors up, but when working on your own masterpiece, be careful that your color palette goes well together.
Just have fun with it though. You will know in an instant what goes well together and what doesn’t. And if you’re unsure, then ask someone else what they think. You can experiment with different colors and schemes and designs so have fun with it!
